18th New Institutionalism Workshop in Toruń

The annual New Institutionalism Workshop (NIW) after more than 18 years has achieved the status of a welcoming and vibrant academic event. Scholars from different disciplines, countries, and even academic traditions have come each year to develop theoretical and empirical frontiers of institutional research.

In 2023 we invite you to participate in the 18th Workshop that will take place in Toruń, Poland at Nicolaus Copernicus University.

The keynote speakers of 2023 Workshop will be prof. Roy Suddaby and prof. Mikołaj Pawlak.

Prof. Roy Suddaby is a world-renowned researcher in organization theory and institutional change. His work contributed to the understanding of the crucial role of symbolic resources - legitimacy, authenticity, identity and history - in the processes of change and innovation in enterprises. He is currently associated with three universities - the University of Victoria in Canada, Washington State University, USA and the University of Liverpool, UK.

Prof. Mikołaj Pawlak deals with migration studies, and recently he has been actively developing a new branch of sociological research - failure studies. Prof. Pawlak represents the young generation of Polish sociologists successfully participating in international research. He is co-editor of the Routledge International Handbook of Failure, a book that institutionalizes failure studies as a new area of critical research.

At the end of the workshop, we are planning a panel discussion entitled "Grand challenges - AI and Institutions", which will be attended by, among others researchers from Wien University, University of South-Eastern Norway and University of Lucerne.

Interesting fact - because we are planning a discussion panel about artificial intelligence, below we present a gallery of graphics generated in the Dall-E program. The prompts given to the program included the following passwords: institutional plan, organizational plan, university and various styles (art deco, gothic, mid-century).

We encourage work that brings forward novel topics, employs innovative methodology, and/or advances fresh perspectives of inquiry. Approaches that drift away from present mainstream themes will enhance and develop our understanding of institutions and institutional phenomena. We are especially keen to hear voices from literature that does not belong to the standard reference list of institutional theory, and/or to learn about scholarly endeavors that draw on work not available in English. Also, in line with the new institutionalism network’s spirit, the workshop encourages collaboration, particularly among scholars drawing on or bridging different disciplines.
